MONTPELIER — Trustees for the Vermont State Colleges system have begun their search for an interim chancellor.
The board adopted a resolution Thursday to search for a temporary chancellor, giving trustees some breathing room to search for a permanent replacement for Chancellor Tim Donovan, who is retiring at the end of the year.
The resolution says the board’s executive committee — which includes half of the 14 trustees — will review a list of submitted names and winnow it down for the full board, which will choose the interim chancellor.
Each member of the board — which includes Gov. Peter Shumlin — and the five college presidents may submit as many as three names to the executive committee. Presidents and board members can nominate themselves, and nominations can be made anonymously.
Nominations are due Sept. 1 and will be reviewed Sept. 9 by the executive committee. The panel will offer a shorter list for the full board’s consideration at its retreat later that month.
The decision to search for an interim chancellor will give the board plenty of time to search for a permanent successor to Donovan. According to minutes from an executive committee meeting in July, experts weighing in on the timeline said it could take up to a year.
To allow enough time, the interim chancellor can be appointed for “up to and possibly beyond one year.”
“I think this is the most important thing this board will do in the next few years, but the procedures should not be set in stone,” said Martha O’Connor, chairwoman of the trustees. “We may have a saint that appears out of nowhere, and I want us to be flexible so we can appoint the best person going forward.”
VSC trustee Jerry Diamond said when the time comes to search for a permanent chancellor, the search committee should include a broader range of representation from the state colleges community.
“When we have done searches in the past, we have included the larger community,” O’Connor said.
She said representation from the wider college community isn’t necessary when searching for an interim chancellor.
“It seems the board is comfortable with the executive committee handling this,” O’Connor said. “But when it comes time to do a search for a permanent chancellor, we’ll most likely include other members of the college community.”
She encouraged anyone interested in the interim job to contact a college president or one of the trustees. A list of the trustees can be found online at goo.gl/UGoHfb.
