MONTPELIER — Loren James Lee Rivers, a longtime Montpelier resident, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the age of 86.
He is survived by his four children, Loren Rivers of Honolulu, Mary Rivers of New York City, Tom Rivers of Oakland, California, and Carol Rivers-Ibrahim of Houston, Texas. He is survived by six grandchildren, James and Patrick Rivers, Ghazi and Tariq Ibrahim, Stephen and Agatha Nyarko.
Jim Rivers was born on December 3, 1927, in Glens Falls, New York, to Loren Rivers and Marion (Lee) Rivers. He attended Glens Falls Catholic schools. He was a U.S. Marine, stationed in Guam during the post-war years. After returning to civilian life, he attended Cornell University, graduating from Cornell Law School in 1955.
In 1962, Jim and his wife, Claire, moved to Montpelier, where James worked for National Life of Vermont for 30 years, until his retirement in 1992. James was very active in St. Augustine’s parish, where he served as lector and as a catechist for St. Augustine’s RCIA program. He was an avid gardener and lover of history. He was also a volunteer for a number of local charities and organizations. He served on the Vermont Board of Mental Health for many years and was very involved in the local food pantry.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Guare & Sons/Barber&Lanier Funeral Home, 30 School St., Montpelier. A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 16 Barre St., Montpelier. A memorial reception will follow the Mass in the Parish Hall. The burial will be held privately for family members in Green Mount Cemetery, Montpelier.
