Man in standoff
faces new charges
NEWPORT — Authorities say a Vermont man who was armed with a rifle on his roof has violated his probation and has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges in a separate case.
Last September, Derrick Niles said he was surrounded by hundreds of nonexistent police officers and retreated to his roof, where he held officers at bay for several hours. Niles pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct and received a one-year deferred sentence.
The Caledonian Record reported that he’s now scheduled to be sentenced July 29 on a probation violation.
Niles was indicted in late May after police allege he forced his way into his estranged wife’s home in March.MORE IN This Just InCASTLETON — Rutland Post 31 pitcher Andy Kenosh called it “mojo.
