BARRE — A Graniteville man was ordered held without bail Thursday after he was accused of a repeat assault on a woman who had a restraining order against him.

Robert H. Lanpher, 50, was arraigned in Washington County criminal court on six counts: a felony charge of second-degree domestic assault in violation of a court order; and five violations of conditions of release, all misdemeanors.

If convicted of the felony, he could face up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine. The five misdemeanors could each bring six months in prison and a $1,000 fine.

According to reports, police were called to a domestic assault occurring shortly before midnight Wednesday in Barre Town. Lanpher is accused of straddling the woman, pinning her and hitting her in the face. She has a black and blue mark to prove it, according to prosecutor Michelle Donnelly on Thursday.

Lanpher’s conditions of release in a case earlier this year involving the same woman stipulated that he not abuse or harass her; have no contact; not enter her residence or property; stay at least 300 feet from her and not drink alcohol.

His attorney requested similar conditions Thursday, and offered to have the suspect be required to check in with police daily to ensure he is not drinking — a behavior his attorney said was linked to the assaults.

But Judge Thomas Zonay said all conditions of Lanpher’s earlier release had been violated.

“We’ve tried them,” the judge said, noting that the conditions in place earlier were meant to prevent “the exact type of situation” that landed Lanpher back in court.

“The court thinks that the state has established that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably prevent the violence,” Zonay said, denying bail for Lanpher.
