• Vt tests emergency plans in drill
    June 03,2014

WATERBURY ó Nearly 1,600 Vermonters are participating in statewide emergency drills this week.

Cities, towns, health care facilities, first responders and others will exercise emergency plans and procedures in response to simulated disasters and events through Saturday.

The Vermont Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security says health care facilities will be presented with a surge of patients and some towns will set up emergency shelters to accommodate people displaced from their homes due to the simulated disaster. Utilities also will be presented with challenges.

The drills will be capped by a 36-hour operation beginning Friday that will involve continuous activity at the Vermont State Emergency Operations Center.

Organizers say the drill is the result of two years of planning.
