CALAIS — Vermont State Police are investigating a fatal car crash on Route 14 in Calais on Wednesday.

State police say a vehicle driven by a 73-year-old man was southbound around 11 a.m. when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle went off the left side of the road and hit a telephone pole. The man’s name was not released by state police until they could notify his next of kin.

State police say the man was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Speed does not appear to have been a factor, and state police described road conditions at the time of the accident as dry.
