MONTPELIER — Police have cited a Barre Town man for throwing a trashcan lid into the road and trying to take a police officer’s pistol out of its holster.

Police say Todd Provencher, 34, was seen by police drunkenly throwing the lid in front of Charlie O’s bar in Montpelier around 11:40 p.m. Sunday. Police made contact with Provencher and asked him to put the top back on the trashcan. Police say Provencher was extremely intoxicated and caused a further disturbance trying to replace the lid.

Provencher then ran across the street and fell. Police tried to take him into protective custody when a struggle ensued and Provencher tried to take the officer’s gun.

Provencher was cited for disorderly conduct, unlawful mischief and attempting to disarm a police officer. He is scheduled to appear in Washington County criminal court in Barre on Dec. 27 to answer the charges.
