• Burlington man accused of attempting to beat wife to death

    BURLINGTON — A Vermont man is facing a charge of attempted murder in the beating of his wife.

    Forty-year-old James Scarola of Burlington, an author of about a half-dozen horror and science fiction novels, pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail following his arraignment Monday.

    Authorities say Scarola’s wife, 36-year-old Colleen Scarola, was attacked with a baseball bat Sunday morning and might not survive. She is hospitalized in critical condition at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

    Police said they responded to a home following a 911 call at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday. Officers found Colleen Scarola with serious head trauma.
