BARRE CITY — Dorothy Shadroui, 91, of Barre, Vt., died Friday, August 9, 2013.
Dorothy was born in Preston, England, on July 19, 1922. She was the daughter of Alice and Arthur Croft. She graduated from St. Andrews Episcopal Church School in 1936.
At the outbreak of World War II, she entered the Royal Air Force where she was part of the British women defense effort. She first worked on the balloon barrage defense system in Liverpool and then in 1941, transferred to a section of British Intelligence located at Chickstands Priory, England, where she was a radio operator interceptor. She was awarded the Medal of Defense and the War Medal. She met Alfred P. Shadroui when he was stationed in England with the 398th American Eighth Air Force Bombardment group in the B-17 Flying Fortress division. They were married in 1945 in Hitchin, England. Dorothy was a war bride and moved to the USA in 1946. She resided with Alfred in Holyoke and then Springfield, Mass., and then settled in Barre, Vt.
Dorothy was on the board of The Central Vermont Humane Society and was president of the Little Paws Humane Society from 1995-1996. She also did volunteer work at Aldrich Public Library.
Many people knew Dorothy from her longtime work as a crossing guard at Mathewson Grade School and it delighted her when adults would approach her and remind her of the times she crossed them when they were children. People also remember Dorothy from her years as a meter maid in Barre. She enjoyed reading, watching movies, following her favorite baseball teams, landscaping and gardening, as well as doing crossword puzzles, traveling with her daughter, Janet, history and archaeology. She had an innate sense of drama, loved telling stories, dancing, and had a fine taste in décor and art. Dorothy was an avid and enthusiastic fan of garage sales, an activity she pursued with her daughter, Janet. She was a diligent writer of newsy letters to her family.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents and her husband. She is survived by five children, Janet Shadroui (Graniteville, Vt.), Donna S. London (Las Vegas, Nev.), Geoffrey Shadroui (East Montpelier, Vt.), Diane Shadroui (Barre, Vt.) and Hilary Shadroui Cornet (Normandy, France); her sister, Marjorie Clarkson, and niece Lynn (Clarkson) Clews (Arnside, England) and nephew John Clarkson (Penwortham, England); grandchildren, Jesse LeClair (Burlington, Vt.), Sarah (LeClair) Young (Exeter, N.H.) and Thomas Alfred Cornet (Normandy, France); and numerous great-nieces and -nephews in England.
Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to Aldrich Public Library, Barre, Vt.
Family and friends may call at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, from 7 to 9 p.m. with a service of remembrance to be held at 8:30 p.m. Extra parking is available in St. Monica’s parking lot.
Burial will take place on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at 10 a.m. in Hope Cemetery in Barre.
Arrangements are in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre.
