• Program collects old appliances
    May 26,2013

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s statewide emergency program is promoting a deal for people who want to get rid of that old, extra refrigerator or freezer.

Efficiency Vermont said it will pay $50 to haul away those appliances. Efficiency Vermont said that’s just the start of the benefits the appliance’s owner will see. The real benefit comes in lower electric bills.

Efficiency Vermont’s Lara Bonn said people taking advantage of the program could save as much as $150 a year on electric bills.

After pickup, the appliances will be 95 percent recycled, with safe disposal of non-recyclable components including insulation, oil and thermostat mercury.

To qualify, the refrigerator or freezer must be working and plugged in.
