HINSDALE, N.H. — A Virginia fugitive faces numerous charges after allegedly leading Brattleboro, Vt., police on a chase in a stolen vehicle into Hins-dale.
Joshua Converse, 40, of Richmond, Va., was charged with resisting arrest, drug possession, loitering and prowling, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and he had an outstanding warrant, police said. Converse is also a fugitive in Virginia, where he is wanted on a parole violation, according to a news release from Hinsdale police.
Police say the incident started Wednesday when an East Dummerston, Vt., homeowner discovered Converse in the house. The homeowner confronted Converse, after which he fled in a vehicle, police said. The homeowner was able to get the vehicle’s registration and reported it to Vermont State Police, police said.
Vermont authorities discovered the car was stolen from Virginia and shortly afterward, at about noon, Brattleboro police found the car traveling south on Putney Road, according to the release. Brattleboro officers pursued the car over the state line onto Monument Road in Hinsdale. Converse allegedly drove the car into a field in a residential area and ran into the woods, police said.
Several police agencies and the Keene police dog began a search for the suspect, setting up a perimeter in the area, but it was unsuccessful and called off at 4:45 p.m., police said.
Hinsdale Police Chief Todd A. Faulkner said Thursday morning the search area included Plain and Monument roads and Meetinghouse Loop in North Hinsdale.
During that time, Hinsdale schools were notified of the incident as a precaution. The only action was to have North Hinsdale students either remain at the school to be picked up by a parent, or be taken by bus directly to a waiting parent at their house, police said.
Hinsdale police and Cheshire County Sheriff’s Deputies asked residents in the area to be on alert for anyone suspicious.
At about 8:45 p.m., Hinsdale police were contacted about a suspicious man near 106 Monument Road, who police said matched the suspect’s description. He tried to run again, but was nabbed by Cpl. Michael C. Bomba and Officer Gerald S. Palmer, police said.MORE IN Vermont NewsMANCHESTER — Police are looking for two men and a Great Dane in connection to the theft of a... Full Story
