The real Jockey Hollow
Having lived in Barre City and Barre Town for 88 of my 92 years, I find it hard to accept what people are calling Jockey Hollow. In today’s mail, I received the Barre Town Newsletter, which prompted me to write this letter and express my feelings.
The newsletter noted project updates, one stating “Jockey Hollow Culvert and Sewer Relocation on Rt. 14 near Lowery’s Auto Sales.” Because Narcis Gosselin named a restaurant “Jockey Hollow” does not mean that is the true area.
To those new to the area in the last 50 years, let me give a small bit of history. In the early 1900s, there was a racetrack off Ayers Street across the river from Mill Street and Webster Avenue. That area is Jockey Hollow because of the racetrack. I have pictures of the racetrack and its grandstand.
Lowery’s Auto Sales is actually located at South Barre Hollow or Bartlett’s Hollow. The Bartlett home is the last house on the left going up South Barre hill. I know the area because I was born and raised at 215 and 182 S. Main until moving to Barre Town.
If I had not been raised in the area, I would not know the difference between the real Jockey Hollow and the erroneous one.
