Steeple is taken down for repairsApril 28,2013
HARTLAND — A church steeple that has sat atop a Vermont church since the mid-1850s has been removed for repairs.
A crane took the 88-foot, 3,000-pound white steeple off the First Universalist Society church in Hartland last week.
More renovations are planned, including work on the church’s exterior.
Minister Paul Sawyer said the congregation has raised $93,000 for the renovations since September.
Recently, the church was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and a $5,000 grant from the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation.
