• Maine hearing delayed for Mass. rapist

    PORTLAND, Maine - A hearing has been delayed until next week for a Gorham man facing a fugitive from justice charge after eluding authorities for 34 years after being convicted of three Massachusetts rapes.

    Friday's hearing for Gary Irving was continued to Monday, so he will remain in Cumberland County Jail through the weekend.

    The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/14C1nsN ) says Irving turned up in court Friday wearing a yellow inmate uniform, the color worn by maximum security prisoners.

    His lawyer, Christopher Leddy, told Justice Roland Cole that he needed more time to review the documents in Irving's case, so the hearing was rescheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday.

    The 52-year-old Irving used an assumed name while living in Gorham and was arrested Wednesday night. He had disappeared while awaiting sentencing for the rapes.
