    Too much money

The League of Women Voters of Vermont joins VPIRG in questioning proposed provisions added to S.82, in committee, that would increase limits on contributions from individuals, corporations and unions to candidates, PACS and parties.

The league supports the provisions of of the bill that improve the timeliness of reporting and would give more transparency to campaign finance. We are concerned about the increasing influence of money in election campaigns. If too much money in campaigns is the problem, how can more money be the solution?

Campaign finance laws must ensure the publicís right to know, combat corruption and undue influence, and enable candidates to compete equitably for public office.

The League continues to look for ways to limit the size and type of contributions from all sources as a means of combating even the perception of undue influence elections and the legislative process following elections.
