BARRE – Voting wasn’t “slow, but steady” in the Granite City when the polls opened this morning. It was just plain slow. How slow? Well in the first 30 minutes 30 of Barre’s 4,911 registered voters cast ballots and at the end of the first hour the number stood at a disappointing 57.
“It has not been what you’d call ‘steady’ and this is the rush,’” veteran poll worker Gary Adamski said during the early going at the Barre Municipal Auditorium.
“It’s going to be a long, slow day,” City Clerk Carol Dawes said, noting absentee ballot requests – less than 200 – were down from last year’s total of roughly 350. Early risers reported mixed reactions to a ballot that includes roughly $37 million in municipal and school spending requests. Asked how she voted, one 83-year-old woman
“A couple of ‘yeses,’ but mostly ‘nos,” she said, noting the $10.5 municipal budget was among the nos, though she supported school spending requests. “I’m for the kids,” she said. A 47-year-old man who said he likes the direction the city is headed and believes it could use a couple of extra police officers said he supported all three major budgets and was hoping they passed. The man might of got a friendly argument from 79-year-old Richard Carpenter, who said he couldn’t support the near-15-cent rate that would be required to finance budgets proposed for the city, it’s centralized elementary school, and its share of Spaulding High School. “I voted pretty much ‘no,’” said the man, who is living on Social Security, savings, and income from the 20 hours a week he’s still working. “I’m hanging in there, but it’s getting tougher and tougher,” he said.
