Barre school taxes are in check

The big increase in the spending side of the elementary school budget in Barre won’t become a big increase in the tax rate. In fact, the Barre school tax rate is projected to increase by about 4.5 percent (5 cents) for a number of reasons.

    — School tax rates are based on the cost per pupil. Our enrollment at the elementary school has increased by 4.4 percent, which helps offset the increased expenditures.

    — Our prior year’s surplus of $91,494 at the elementary school and $40,054 at the high school reduce the amount needed to be raised by taxes.

    — The high school budget adds only a penny to the tax rate.

    — Property values in Barre are falling. The adjustment for the common level of appraisal reduces our school tax by 3.5 percent because property values in Barre are falling.

    — The board has included a 4 cent increase to the state’s equalized tax rate in our projections; however, if the Legislature doesn’t increase the tax rate, your school taxes would be about the same as last year.

Barre’s school budgets are well below the state average and last year ranked among the lowest in Vermont according to the Vermont Department of Education website.
