    Vote to support Circulator

I am writing to urge Montpelier voters to vote yes for the Circulator Bus (Article 14) on Town Meeting Day. The Circulator Bus provides no-fare service between downtown and the outlying areas of the city making stops. The bus makes connections to other local bus routes and to the commuter and Link bus services. It provides safe transportation for kids to the swimming pool and the North Branch Nature Center.

It does not go everywhere, and its hourly service may not be as often as some people might like. It is, however, designed to do as much as possible with a prudent budget. For riders too far from the scheduled route, deviations can be arranged. I believe that the service has significant value for Montpelier. Article 14 asks the voters to approve $40,000, which is approximately 21 percent of the cost of providing the service.

The Circulator Bus is in its second year of operation. As awareness of the service has increased, its ridership in the second year has increased 74 percent. It is now providing close to 2,000 rides per month.

The bus is an investment in the infrastructure of our community. It relieves the pressure on parking spaces and reduces our carbon footprint. For our citizens without cars or with health issues, the bus is the primary way, perhaps the only way, to maintain their independent living.
