Refs need to be impartial
I would just like to comment on the lack of basic skills by the referees who oversaw the Twinfield-Williamstown seventh-/eighth-grade girls game Feb. 15. I’m not sure what game the officials were watching, but it seemed like they missed every single illegal maneuver by the Williamstown team. They definitely missed some of the travels and such by Twinfield, as well, but it was painfully obvious who they wanted to win the game.
In fact, the male referee made a joke to one of the parents when he finally called a Williamstown girl on traveling, “There, I saw that one.” When the parent made a comment back, “About time,” he was removed from the game.
The ref was making comments to the Williamstown parents, as well; he obviously knew them. I understand that referees are only human, but they are also supposed to be impartial. What kind of lesson does it teach the players when the referees are so blatantly biased in favor of the home team?
