Town budget

Barre Town holds its municipal elections in May, and the municipal budget is voted on and town officers elected at that time.



School budget

Proposed $10,815,109 – $239,329, or 2.26 percent, more than this year’s budget of $10,575,780.

Budget includes $10,464,359 for the operation of Barre Town Middle and Elementary School, up $303,579, or 2.98 percent, and $350,750 in grant funds that will not affect property taxes. That’s a reduction of $64,250, or about 15.5 percent, from the $415,000 that was budgeted for grants this year. The budget also includes an additional $84,645 to cover the cost of expanding the school’s essential early education program.



Union high school budget

Proposed $12,303,664 – $191,918, or 1.58 percent, more than this year’s budget of $12,111,746.

Budget includes $11,863,664 for the operation of Spaulding High School, up $570,233, or 5 percent, and $440,000 in grants that won’t affect taxes. That’s a reduction of $249,000, or 36 percent, from the $689,000 that was budgeted for grants this year.

The Spaulding budget is approved by voters in both Barre Town and neighboring Barre.

Contested races

There are no contested races in Barre Town this year. Brent Tewksbury is running unopposed for his two-year seat on the Barre Town School Board, and Krista Metivier is the only candidate for the three-year seat that Jay Paterson was appointed to fill after longtime School Director Bill Kirkland died last year. There are no announced candidates running for the three-year seat on the Spaulding High School Board that is currently held by Joel Garbacik.



Meeting location

Barre Town does not hold a traditional town meeting. Election of school officials and approval of the local school and union high school budgets and consideration of all other school matters will be by Australian ballot. Polls will be open in the gymnasium of Barre Town Middle and Elementary School from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 5.
