    Ronald L. Ashley Sr.

    ROYALTON — Ronald L. Ashley Sr., 62, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

    He was born June 13, 1950, in Hanover, N.H., the son of Benjamin and Arlene L. (Shepard) Ashley. He attended school in Bethel. On April 5, 1969, he married Susan L. Clark, of South Royalton. They lived a short time in Bethel before moving to Royalton, where they raised their family. Ron worked at the Veneer Mill in Bethel, many construction companies in the area, 17 years for the Engelberth Construction Co. of Colchester, six years at Victor Technology of West Lebanon, N.H., and for many years had his own general contracting business.

    He was a member of the National Rifle Association, a Boy Scout leader with Chuck Ainsworth in South Royalton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, sewing, baking, cooking, building race cars, working on his 1972 Plymouth Fury, campfires and working in his rock and flower gardens. He enjoyed his hunting trips to Colorado at his friends’ place, Nate and Keith Ainsworth. Ron’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his children, grandchildren and the love of his life, his wife, Susan.

    He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan Ashley, a son, Ronald Ashley Jr., and his wife, Jamie, a daughter Stacy Ashley and her fiance, Josh McCarthy, all of Royalton; a daughter Katherine Stender and her husband, Alan, of Tunbridge; two brothers, Benjamin Ashley Jr. and his wife, Gloria, of Royalton, and Edwin Ashley and his wife, Regina, of Quechee; his grandchildren, Dakota Stender, Allison “Queenie” Hull, C.J. Hull, Kyle Ashley, Alexis “Flash” Ashley, Isabella “Girdy” Ashley, Lindsey Mathias and Jenna Hyde; his family dogs, Harley, Gunner, Moss and Mia; his best friends, Lenny Amell, of Royalton, and Harry DeHaven, of Sheffield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    A time to celebrate Ron’s life, tell stories, and meet family and friends will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, 300 Vermont Route 110, Chelsea. A public memorial celebration and reception will be held later this summer. Ron’s family would like to thank Dr. Dragnev and his nurses at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center and a special thank you to Phil Palmerville and the nurses of One East at DHMC.
