MONTPELIER — A female driver was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after her car was rear-ended by another vehicle, which fled the scene, at the U.S. Route 2 roundabout, city police said.

The woman, Susan Shontelle-Smith, of East Montpelier, was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta to work around 6:20 a.m. when a vehicle crashed into her rear bumper and then fled, police said. She was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center after reporting back pain, police said. A nursing supervisor at the hospital later said she was treated and released.

The other vehicle is believed to be a two-tone or dark station wagon, police said. The male driver fled in the direction of Barre and Berlin, police said.

According to police, the woman was yielding to traffic in the roundabout at the time of the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 223-3445.
