BARRE — The Barre man who was shot on Brooklyn Street in November was sentenced to up to four years in prison Friday on charges that predate the shooting, including aggravated domestic assault.
Seth Parry, 20, pleaded guilty in October to aggravated domestic assault, domestic assault, two violations of an abuse prevention order and two violations of conditions of release.
Under the plea deal, Parry will spend the next week in jail and be released Thursday to Return House, a transitional residential facility in Barre, where he will undergo counseling for domestic abuse.
According to the police affidavit, Parry punched a female in the face, choked her and slammed her head against a wall a year ago because she refused to give Parry his car keys.
A few days later, Parry was in a vehicle with the victim, even though he had been ordered by a court to stay away from her, and he broke the victim’s finger when she refused to give him a cellphone.
Friday in Washington County criminal court in Barre, Judge Thomas Devine said he was concerned about “the sense of entitlement that (Parry) may have that court orders do not apply to him and conditions are meaningless.”
Devine said he was also concerned that Parry committed another domestic assault just days after being arraigned on a charge of felony domestic assault.
“Many people would see a pending felony charge as a reason to modify their behavior,” he said.
Parry was already in custody because he failed to show up in time for his sentencing hearing on these charges Dec. 20. Parry arrived at the court later that afternoon, but the warrant had already been issued and he did not have the money to post bail.
Parry was shot in the shoulder Nov. 15 near his apartment on Brooklyn Street. A witness told police that a masked man started fighting with Parry and a gun went off, striking Parry. Police say they are investigating.
Parry has a previous conviction for simple assault in 2011.MORE IN Central VermontMARSHFIELD — Norman is a rather randy assistant librarian who manages to wreak havoc for... Full StoryThe following is a sampling of calls to Montpelier Police in recent days. Full Story
