BARRE — The Granite City man accused of posing as a Barre police officer to buy and sell items online was back in court Monday, charged with contacting someone he had been ordered by the court to stay away from.

Mark A. Sumner, 37, pleaded not guilty in Washington County criminal court to violating conditions of his release. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Sumner is already facing two counts of felony false personation, two counts of felony identity theft, and a misdemeanor count of impersonation of a public officer.

According to the police affidavit for the original charges, Sumner was using an email address he created claiming to be the Barre City police to sell items on the online classifieds site Craigslist. He also allegedly used a Barre police officer’s name and address to open accounts on the auction website eBay and the payment service PayPal.

He also allegedly used another man’s information to make online purchases without his permission.

According to the police affidavit for the new charge, Sumner left a message on the man’s voicemail on Christmas Day asking the man what size clothes he wore because Sumner bought a “billion dollars worth of clothes” and could not use them all.

Sumner has conditions of release forbidding him from having contact with the man.
