• Fire chars East Montpelier home

    Firefighters don gear Monday to enter a smoke-filled house at 4238 County Road in East Montpelier that caught fire about 2 p.m. State police said the fire is considered suspicious and being investigated. Two people who live there and had been arguing shortly before the fire were able to escape the home safely, but a pet rabbit died of smoke inhalation, police said late Monday.     Firefighters don gear Monday to enter a smoke-filled house at 4238 County Road in East Montpelier that caught fire about 2 p.m. State police said the fire is considered suspicious and being investigated. Two people who live there and had been arguing shortly before the fire were able to escape the home safely, but a pet rabbit died of smoke inhalation, police said late Monday. Damages are estimated at $150,000.

    Fire crews from East Montpelier, Berlin, Montpelier, Plainfield, Worcester and Williamstown responded. State police are asking anyone with information about this fire to call the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program at 1-800-32-ARSON for up to a $5,000 reward.
