Moretown Landfill’s owner sends trash elsewhere
MORETOWN — The parent company of the Moretown Landfill has been diverting a notable amount of waste to other facilities in the Northeast as the local site nears its permitted capacity, according to the landfill’s general manager.
General Manager Tom Badowski said that during the last several weeks the landfill’s parent company has shifted some material taken in at transfer stations in Williston and St. Johnsbury, which was destined for Moretown, to another landfill the company owns in South Hadley, Mass.
In the last 60 days, several industrial contracts with operations ranging from sewage treatment plants to manufacturers have begun being handled at an incinerator in Connecticut and a facility in New Hampshire, Badowski said.
The overall effect has been a reduction of about 85 to 100 tons of refuse taken in at the Moretown landfill each day, he said. The landfill has typically received 550 tons of refuse daily, he said.
“From a bottom line standpoint, I can tell you it’s huge,” Badowski said.
Third-party customers, such as independent haulers, have not been affected yet, Badowski said Monday.
The company had sent a letter to the Moretown Select Board Nov. 2 warning that up to 80 percent of normal intake could need to be turned away starting Dec. 1 to extend the life of the landfill. The company had estimated it would reach its permitted limit in February if no adjustments were made.
The Moretown Landfill currently has three areas for dumping waste. The company is seeking permission to create a fourth area, or “cell,” which would be about the size of the other three combined.
The town’s Development Review Board is reviewing an application for the expansion. The next meeting is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall.
The state recently cited the company for 12 alleged violations, ranging from odor to stormwater issues. Badowski said he believed all the concerns have been addressed and that a formal reply to the allegations could be coming this week.
The state’s solid waste program manager, Cathy Jamieson, said some actions require immediate responses but others have longer response times. According to the letter, dated Nov. 20, many items required immediate responses; several needed to be addressed within a week; and other concerns required a company response within two, 14 or 30 days.
Executives at the parent company of the landfill, Advanced Disposal of Jacksonville, Fla., will decide what — and when — further intake reductions may be needed at the Moretown facility, according to Badowski. Messages left with the company’s vice president of landfills, Gerald Allen Jr., and its chief marketing officer, Mary O’Brien, were not immediately returned.
