BARRE — A local restaurant is serving as a drop spot for those interested in helping members of a young Barre Town family who lost almost everything in a Wednesday morning fire that destroyed their Phelps Road home.

With Damian Barnett, Kaysie Breer and their four children — Matthew, 10, Lindsey, 5, Colin, 2, and Camdyn, 6 months — temporarily staying at the Comfort Inn in the wake of the devastating fire, The Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen is collecting clothing, toys and gift cards for the family.

Clothing sizes include: men’s 32/34 pants and extra-large tops; women’s size 14 pants and extra-large tops; boys’ size 10/12; girls’ size 5/6; boys’ size 2T; and girls’ size 6/9 months.

Owners of the Cornerstone, which is in the historic Aldrich Block at the corner of North Main and Elm streets, have been in contact with the family and arranged to serve as a collection point for donations.

Meanwhile, Sue Poczobut, chief executive officer of Granite Hills Credit Union, is working with the family to establish a secure account for financial contributions. She hoped to have those details worked out by the end of the day today.

Barre Town Fire Chief Chris Violette said Wednesday that a state fire investigator would try to determine the cause of the blaze, which he said drew firefighters from six communities.

The fire appeared to have started in the home’s basement area, filling it with thick smoke before quickly burning through the first and second floors on its way to the roof.

No one was injured, and Barnett said he got the family’s dogs out safely.
