US holds the checkbook
I appreciated Katharine Shapiro’s letter of Nov. 23 stating, “As we stand on the edge of the ‘fiscal cliff’ where is the mention of suspending the more than $3 billion we spend on arming Israel every year?”
The next day the Times Argus editorial titled “Political power play” stated the following: “The Obama-Clinton team has been especially impressive during the current crisis between Israel and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and while the cease-fire was brokered primarily by Egypt’s new president Mohamed Morsi, the Americans influenced the negotiations.”
Doesn’t it seem reasonable if some thought and research were given to the topic, that the average world citizen would see the American taxpayer dutifully supplying F-16 fighter aircraft, drone technology, missiles, training, etc., used by the “Israeli-American” team to destroy homes and schools, and kill or drive out the entrapped Gazan people of whom 50 percent are children?
To say that the Obama-Clinton team was “especially impressive” seems a bit overboard when our “leaders” have the power to stop the killing and massive destruction almost immediately with or without Egypt. Perhaps Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was correct on Oct. 3, 2001, when he said, “… don’t worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it.”
