Shumlin spends $320k to win re-election

(AP Photo/Toby Talbot)MONTPELIER — Republican gubernatorial challenger Randy Brock outspent Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin more than two to one in his unsuccessful attempt to unseat the first-term governor, according to new campaign finance documents filed Thursday with the Vermont Secretary of State.
Brock spent $806,647 in his campaign, a figure that included a $300,000 loan, his report said.
Meanwhile, Shumlin reported spending $320,761. His campaign finished with no loans and he still has $932,975 in the bank.
Thursday was a deadline for candidates to file their post-election campaign finance reports with the Secretary of State’s office.
The reports give a final tally on how much was spent during the just-completed election cycle.
The Vermonters First political action committee spent $952,435 to support conservative candidates. Most of the statewide candidates supported by the PAC, including GOP Treasurer Candidate Wendy Wilton, lost their elections.
Wilton’s campaign spent $90,075 after having raised $95,615. Her opponent, incumbent Democrat Beth Pearce, who was re-elected, spent $219,708 after raising $246,540.
In the race for the vacant auditor’s seat victorious Democrat Doug Hoffer spent $53,842 and raised $56,737.
Hoffer’s opponent, Republican Vincent Illuzzi, spent $92,287 after raising $91,287.
