@Normal:Answers only a political need
H.440, the bill to make our semi-autonomous state Deptartment of Education into a governor owned agency, as passed by the Senate, is a pretension only when it comes to alleviating the concerns of politicization. (ďSenate goes along on education changes, April 19) While the Senate does keep the state BOEís length of terms, and allows it to keep the authority to develop statewide school policy, the bill makes the new Secretary of Education answerable only to the governor ó in other words we will have a toothless state board that is overseen by a CEO whom the state BOE has literally no authority or control over. There is no mechanism to insure that the state boardís decisions will be honored.
The Vermont General Assembly and governorís office have put their official stamp of approval on making the education of our children nothing more than more fodder for the campaign trails, and that I find shameful at best. This is not a ďconsensusĒ bill ó this is absolute capitulation to the political needs of Montpelier. Rama Schneider
